Was told by two attorneys that before I file Chapter 7 bankruptcy I need to be three months in arrears on my minimum payments. What should I tell the credit card companies? The calls are already non-stop.

If you have an attorney handling your bankruptcy, you tell the credit card companies to contact your attorney and don’t bother you anymore. If you don’t have an attorney, then the calls are your problem.

The changes to the bankruptcy laws a few years ago were minimal, but I think the major part was that you had to first try a credit counseling agency before filing bankruptcy. If you’ve done that, then you tell the credit card companies to contact the agency. If you haven’t done that, then the calls are your problem.

Personally, I don’t answer any cell phone calls from numbers I don’t recognize, especially 800 or 888 numbers, and for sure no ‘private’ or ‘restricted’ numbers. And I have an fax machine on my landline, which works well for discouraging telemarketers, but would be just as effective for bill collectors.
