Has anyone out there ever filed chapter 13 bankruptcy? If you have, how much did it cost, and how much of that actually went to the attorney. I got caught up in an insurance scam and ended up with a $125,000 bill that should have only been approximately $60,000, most of which my insurance co. should have paid.
Thanks!
Sort of a hard to answer question…..
For starters, not only are you paying your own attorney fees, but also the trustee fees. Add to that court costs, and the cost of any credit counseling you have to take.
The good news is the take the attorney fees and make them part of your chapter 13 "plan". These debt bet priority and they are the first to be paid off.
I've worked with a lot of folks….generally the attorney will get around $1500 and the trustee $1000 (or more depending on how big your bankruptcy is).
With a Chapter 7, expect to pay $1500-2000. If you pay more than that, file a complaint with the US Trustee's office.
